The thirty-second habit

After a muddy run, knock the dirt off, pull the insoles out and let both air separately overnight. Honestly, that one habit does more for smell than any spray you can buy.

Mesh and knit uppers

We use a soft brush, cool water, a drop of mild soap. Mesh holds fine dust deep inside the weave, so it is small circles and a lot of patience, then blotting with a towel. Knit uppers like Flyknit can fuzz up if you scrub hard, which is why we do not.

Midsoles, grooves, stones

Foam midsoles clean up nicely with a melamine sponge. Outsole grooves need a stiff brush, and sometimes a toothpick for the little stones from the Bandstand promenade. We keep the shoe upright so water does not pool in the foam.

Insoles and the smell question

Insoles get hand washed in soapy water, rinsed, dried in shade. A sprinkle of baking soda inside overnight helps between proper cleans. If the smell returns two days later, though, it is in the foam and lining, not the insole, and that needs a deeper clean.

What quietly kills runners

Heat, mostly. Drying them on the balcony in afternoon sun, or near a geyser, makes foam stiff and loosens the glue. Machine washing does similar damage. So does lacing up a pair that is still wet from yesterday. If you run most days, two pairs on rotation solves a lot of this.
