How to get rid of shoe smell

Smelly shoes are not a hygiene failure. They are what happens when sweat, warmth and damp meet foam. Here is how to fix it properly.

Why shoes start to smell

Your feet sweat more than you think, especially in Mumbai humidity. The sweat itself barely smells. The bacteria that feed on it inside your insole and lining do. Keep the shoe damp and warm, and those bacteria multiply every day.

Quick fixes that help a bit

  • Baking soda sprinkled inside overnight and shaken out in the morning
  • Dry tea bags or a sock filled with coffee grounds left inside
  • Shoe deodorant spray, which works for a day or two

All of these absorb or mask the smell. None of them remove the bacteria, so the smell comes back.

What actually removes the smell

Wash the insoles. If they come out, hand wash them in warm water with mild detergent, rinse well and let them dry completely. This alone fixes a lot of cases. Clean the lining. Wipe the inside with a cloth dampened in diluted detergent, then with a cloth dampened in plain water. Dry fully. This is the step everyone rushes. A shoe that is still slightly damp inside will smell again in two days.

Stopping it from coming back

  • Rotate two pairs so each gets a full day to dry
  • Take insoles out overnight after a sweaty day
  • Wear cotton or moisture-wicking socks
  • Store shoes in an open rack, not a closed box
  • In the monsoon, stuff wet shoes with paper as soon as you take them off
If the smell survives all of that, it is living deep in the foam. Our shoe odour removal cleans and treats the inside properly.

FAQ

Questions people ask us

Does putting shoes in the freezer remove the smell?

It slows bacteria down for a while but does not kill most of them. The smell returns once the shoes warm up.

Should I wash smelly shoes in the machine?

No. It rarely reaches deep into the foam and risks damaging the shoe. Wash insoles by hand instead.

Why do my shoes smell only in the monsoon?

Because they never dry fully between wears. Damp is what lets bacteria grow fast.

Can very smelly shoes be saved?

Usually, with a proper inside clean. If the insole foam has broken down, replacing it is often the final fix.
