Shoe care in the Mumbai monsoon

Four months of rain is hard on shoes. Most damage happens not in the rain itself, but in the days after, when wet shoes are left to dry badly. Here is how to avoid it.

When your shoes get soaked

Take them off as soon as you can. Remove the laces and insoles. Stuff the shoes tightly with plain paper or a cotton cloth, and change it after an hour or two when it is wet. Leave them in a spot with moving air, like under a fan. Do not put them in the sun, on a heater or near a hair dryer. Fast heat is what lifts soles and cracks leather.

Leather in the rain

Once dry, leather often shows white salt lines and feels stiff. Wipe the lines with a cloth dampened in a mix of water and a little white vinegar, then condition the leather. Do this soon. Salt left on leather dries it out for good.

Suede in the rain

Blot, do not rub. Let it dry naturally with paper inside. Brush the nap once it is completely dry. If it has gone blotchy, the whole panel needs an even clean, which is hard to do at home without making it worse.

Mould in the cupboard

Shoes put away even slightly damp can grow mould within a week in Mumbai. Store shoes only when bone dry. Keep them in an open rack with some air flow, and put a few silica gel packets or a small bag of charcoal in the cupboard. Check the pairs you rarely wear every couple of weeks.

What to wear

  • Rubber, EVA or waterproof shoes for heavy rain days
  • Keep suede and good leather for dry days
  • Carry a spare pair of socks to the office
After the monsoon, a full clean resets everything. Our shoe laundry with pickup deals with mud, mould, salt lines and that lingering damp smell in one go.

FAQ

Questions people ask us

How do I dry shoes quickly in the monsoon?

Stuff them with paper, change it often and keep them under a fan. Avoid direct heat, which damages glue and leather.

How do I remove mould from shoes?

Light mould on leather can be wiped with diluted vinegar and then conditioned. Heavy mould needs a proper clean and sanitising.

Are sneakers okay in the rain?

Synthetic and mesh sneakers handle rain fairly well if dried properly afterwards. Suede and canvas suffer more.

Should I clean shoes after the monsoon?

Yes. A clean after the rains removes mud, salt and the bacteria that cause smell before they settle in.
