How to whiten yellow soles

Dirt or oxidation?

Scrub a small part of the sole with soap and a brush. If it gets whiter, it was dirt. If it stays the same creamy yellow, the rubber or the clear outer layer has oxidised. Sun, heat and time all speed that up, and Mumbai has plenty of all three.

For dirty soles

A stiff brush, warm water and a bit of detergent does most of the work. A melamine sponge, the white "magic eraser" kind, is great on midsoles and rubber toe caps. Go easy on painted or printed areas.

About toothpaste and bleach

Toothpaste is just a mild abrasive. It works on scuffs, a bit. Bleach is the one we would keep away from. It can make yellowing worse and weakens the glue line where sole meets upper. We see a lot of shoes that tried this first.

For oxidised soles

True yellowing needs a sole whitening treatment activated by UV light, done carefully so it does not touch the upper. It takes time and some trial on each sole. Results range from a little brighter to almost new, depending on how far gone the rubber is.

Keeping them white

Store sneakers away from windows. Wipe the soles after a dusty day. And do not leave them in a hot car boot, which yellows rubber faster than anything.
